I started to think about last year again, and what were the biggest lessons I learned, so that I’d pay attention to these things in the future too. So this is just my own little list, not trying to teach others, mostly trying to teach myself. 😀 Please comment me a random lesson learned that you had in 2017!
1. When people show you who they are, believe them. The first time.
When you are being mistreated the first time, it’ll be followed by many other times. Oprah said this so well. Giving endless second chances… Just don’t do it. Understand that you need to show an example how you want others to treat by treating yourself the best possible way. So basically let go of toxic people, know that what is about to come is better than your past. You don’t need to rescue others, there’s a danger that becomes a pattern without an ending. I wish I had understood this as a young girl, but then again, I might not have learned it if I hadn’t experienced it myself. The only person you need to give endless second chances is yourself.
2. Don’t ever forget who you are.
There might come a time you start feeling empty, tired, even depressed. You haven’t done those things in a while that make you feel alive, things that make you you. Don’t ever be too busy to not have time for those things, how ridiculous, tiny or funny those might be to others. And if you forgot what they were, remember you can rediscover or even reinvent yourself anytime any day. I know right now everyone’s talking about the new year new you stuff, but don’t be hung up on the calendar, you can start over any day any moment.
The last time I lost myself a bit was after reading some mean comments about me in 2017. Not being enough etc. I started feeling empty, and I started to think all of my problems had an answer, not being enough. I was still going to therapy, and got a big wakeup call at my next session. What was I thinking, the people who didn’t even know me personally suddenly defined who I was? I’ve been blogging for 12 years, why do I end up being in a situation like this? Because I’m only human. And when life gets tough, this can happen. Never let others define you, because what others think of you is their problem, not yours.
3. Before anyone else likes you, like yourself first.
Nowadays with the social media world you could easily forget this. Before anyone likes you on Facebook, Instagram, wherever, like yourself first. Don’t seek for others approval or validation on social media. The only approval you need is from yourself, give that to yourself every day.
4. Your mind is more powerful than you think.
Our beliefs create our reality. That’s why everyone’s reality is different. When you let yourself live a positive life, you experience how miracles happen, how life flows in a way you couldn’t even imagine. This is something I learned before 2017, but I could add this every year on lessons learned list, every year it proves itself to be true.
4. Mieli on voimakkaampi kuin uskoisikaan.
Mitä me ajattelemme, sen me koemme.
5. Don’t say yes when you want to say no.
No is a complete sentence. Have no regrets or guilt for saying no, you have the right to say no. If you are a people pleaser, I know it needs practice, but you’ll see it becomes easier and easier by time. Trust your inner voice, when it says no don’t say yes just to please others. When I first started to practice this, my “no” would sound like this: “Maybe sorta kinda like… no. No-ish. I mean maybe yes but maybe no. I mean like no.” Not even kidding. 😀 It was my special skill, to soften up the no in a way you didn’t even understand if I was saying yes or no. I could have finished it with “lol” at the end to confuse even more.
Sinulla on täysi oikeus siihen.

This is what I needed! Just have to learn how to say ‘no’ and don’t feel guilty anymore. Unfortunately I have to work with one toxic person, but just one more month. We should learn how to treat people like that, because they know how to use our weekness!

Great post 🙂 I have to say that the biggest lesson I’ve learned this year was: to put myself first. I was caring too much for others, while they didn’t care so much about me 🙂
Best wishes to you for the new year!
PS. I am one of those silent readers and refering to your lesson number 2 I want to just say that I think you’re a great person, I read your blog for about 7 years or even more (not sure 🙂 ) and I don’t want to stop. You have your own style (which I love 😀 ) and you don’t quit it. Please stay yourself forever 🙂 and remember that haters gonna hate – you really don’t have to care about their opinion at all 🙂 like you said – they don’t know you, so how can they judge?
XOXO 🙂

Kiitos Marianna mahtavasta blogistasi! Olet inspiroinut monia!
Älä välitä tympeistä ja ilkeistä ihmisistä, sillä heillä itsellään on ongelmia, joista he pyrkivät pääsemään eroon levittämällä pahaa oloaan. Tsemppiä ja ihanaa Uutta Vuotta!

After all the ‘what I achieved’ r’what I want to achieve’ posts I enjoyed reading yours so much. You made me realize I should probably make a list myself and have a look at all the lessons I’ve learned in 2017 – or maybe life taught me is a better way to name it.
My lesson I think would be that killing problematic situations or my anxiety with laughter isn’t the way to go and in 2018 I’m definitely going to work on this as much as possible.
Wishing you an amazing New Year with beautiful lessons learnt (but not the hard way).
With kindness,

Hi Marianna!
Love your post, find it very inspiring! Love your outfit too, dark turtlenecks with Wales Check is my go-to outfit these days 😉
About 2017, I think the biggest and most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that if you count on other people to make you happy, you’ll always be disappointed. I’ve learnt to put myself first, to think of my own happiness. Basically : that your worth isn’t based on someone’s incapability to see it or to just love truly in general. I learned to cheer myself up, to seek my potential, to realize how much power I have within myself, and that my strenghts are also within me. I learnt to count on myself, to value myself even when I’ve been hurt, that one person can’t be your whole world even though you love them endlessly.
In the end, being strong enough to realize that someone might mean the world to you, but being strong enough to realize they are just not worth the fight anymore.
Wishing you a Happy New Year, full of little and bigger joys
xxx

Happy new year Marianna! An other great post of yours. I specially agree with tip number 4. “Your mind is more powerful than you think”. I suffered from unhappiness during last three years because I thought I had to achieve certain goals in life at that time (better job, get married, etc) but I guess I was suffering pressure from people around me and myself believing that that was what I supposed to achieved. When I changed the perspective of things I realized that I had achieved a lot, that everybody is different and it’s ok to have different goals in life and i don’t have to follow the same life path. As long as we are happy, why do we have to worry about what other people think and do?
I love the pics, they are from my city Madrid 🙂 I hope you came back soon

My lesson is: You will never be happy if you constantly look for what others have.
