A rainy grey day is a good excuse to wear almost all black, not do your hair or makeup, and not care too much. Next to the weather you can’t look that bad, right? Well I look a little tired, so not sure about that after all. Tiredness might also have something to do with the fact that I haven’t slept that well in a long time. Almost a month ago started my waking up too early -problems. Don’t know if it’s because of something psychological, or maybe I’ve been working out too much suddenly, or maybe just some random brain-too-active phase. I’ve been waking up at 4AM and always thought oh crap not again, started to stress about it, and made everything worse. After googling about this problem (I always diagnose myself according to google, so clever), I understood that the only solution now is just to do my best not stress about this. Just breathe and accept the fact that I’m having a little sleepless phase going on. I hoped that sleeping at my parents would make change, but it didn’t… Maybe I’ll do some relaxing meditations now, write all the things going on in my head in a journal, just do the best to clear my mind before going to bed. Have any of you had experience with the same problem, waking up too early, and how did it went with you? (Please tell me it ended?)

I had a similar problem, just in my case it was the fact that I couldn’t fall asleep even when I was very tired… :/ It lasted for many weeks (even at Christmas! 🙁 ) And suddenly this weekend I managed to get a good night sleep again 🙂 Probably because I have finally calmed down and had a family visit that I was looking forward too 🙂 Hopefully my insomnia time will be over now and so will be yours :))))) I’m sure it’s temporary, you probably just stress to much! I know how hard it is not to worry but it is possible! Maybe try visiting home again? Or ask a good friend to come over for a few days and do nothing but relax? xxxx
Marianna says
That must have been an exhausting problem too.. Funny that I don’t have any problem with falling asleep, just the waking up thing. Good to hear you got rid of that! Those are some good tips, relaxing and seeing friends and family. 🙂 x
kotryna says
yup. l have the same problem since 2011 l guess. l have ‘good’ and ‘bad’ periods with this issue. everytime l have something intense going on in my life – my sleeping issues gets bigger. the only one way to get out of this is just to try relax more and not to stress out that much. probably its the only way to get rid of it.
Marianna says
Oh no, I really feel you, you’ve had that for a long time then! Yeah, relaxing and trying to avoid all kind of stress might be the only solution.
JD says
I had very similar problem, the difference was that I couldn’t fall asleep, and sometimes I was awake till 7-8 o’clock! Luckily, that time I was working and studying rather late hours, co I could sleep until 12 or something. But still, 4 hours of sleep don’t seem like much fun. I don’t know what was the problem, probably too much overthinking and stress (yeah, and as in your case, the stress got worse while thinking about this whole insomnia), but I also found out something else. When I was lying in bed, I couldn’t fall asleep, because my heart was beating too fast (especially after a drink with friends) and I discovered that it was caused by the lack of magnesium – when I took a pill before sleep my heart came back to its normal pace. Moreover, I tried to drink a lot of melissa tea in the evening. Similar to you, Google is also my best friend and doctor 😀 but googling and reading my sympthomps at night made my eyes tired and finally let me fall asleep in the morning. Hope you’ll be better soon!
PS. Your blog is amazing, I’ve been your follower since umm 2009 I think. You’re my great inspiration and I hope I’ll meet you one day 🙂 Kisses from Poland!

That sounds so bad too, good that you discovered what was wrong! And yep starting to stress about not sleeping makes the problem worse. I know what you mean dying to sleep after a drink, I have experienced that too! Thank you so much for sharing this and for those sweet words, really appreciate it! <3 🙂

You look amazing as always 🙂 Not tired! When I´m having trouble with my sleep the thing that works best for me is to force myself to change the time to normal again. My boyfriend goes to work at 05:30 in the morning and we live in a 1 room apartment so sometimes I wake up and I´m a person that if I wake up I´m fully awake so then I have to force myself to stay up all night so that I don´t fall asleep to early because then I will wake up early again.
I think the best thing you can do is to stay up really long. Like 2-3 am in the night because then you wont wake up at 4 am. And put your alarm at 10 am or when you normally wake up. It wont work the first time but after 2-3 times it should work for you 🙂 I hope this will help sweetie.
Marianna says
Aw that’s good to hear! Hmm probably I should try that, now I’ve always went to bed around 11PM, and forced myself to lie there until 8AM. But that could actually work, if it worked with you, thank you Dixi! Might try it! 🙂 x

Moi,

Hi! I’ve been reading you blog for a 4 years, and this is the first time I decided to write a comment, becaus I feel like it may be helpful. 2 years ago I’ve had the same insomnia problem, when in best case I slept just a few hours every night, despite I had an active day and was actually tired. How it turned out, the reason was in my weight, it was too low for my nature (frequently I woke up hungry, but didn’t care about it). I won’t judge your body, you should listen to yourself first of all. But since I gained a little weight (I’m not fat, I’m kind of healthy eating, adoring sport, curvy girl now) I sleep like a baby again and have a lot of energy! Also, you can have some psychological problems, which you hide from yourself (yeah, that’s happene sometimes), so maybe you should try to figure it out by yourself first, but feel ok to ask for a help some therapist. Just remember that pillows won’t help you with your inner problem. Take care of yourself, I wish you all the best!
Marianna says
Thank you for the comment Sofia! I think I’m in my natural well-being weight, I always make sure to eat well before going to bed, so I doubt it has to do with that in my case… But I know that I changed my lifestyle to a little more active one the same time I got the problems, and yeah there might be too much things going on in my head. Thanks again, good to hear you solved your sleeping problem! 🙂 And yes I believe mine will go away too, some relaxing maybe needed. 🙂 Take care you too! x
JOURNAL OF STYLE says
I’ve had this not-sleeping-issues sometimes… and I’ve read this:
A couple of hours before going to bed, try to relax – calm music, candles for example, bathing, tea and no stressful things – like working on something or watching disturbing movies and I would avoid the internet at the evening/night. Since it could be a overstimulation (nowadays and so typical for our society). Hope it works, lovely Marianna! And it’ll end with you body and mind find the needed balance…
Sweet dreams!!! <3

Hello 🙂
First of all, I wanted to say that I love your scarf 🙂 It looks so warm and cosy ^^
I also have a sleep-issue like you. After looking it up in books and on the internet I learned that my sleep-issue is due to some points:
– I shouldn’t eat chocolate or drink coca cola 30 – 60 minutes before going to bed
– the same goes to being in front of the computer or the mobile phone, 30 minutes before going to sleep I disconnect my computer/mobile phone
– mostly before big events or other important stuff I start to mentally stress out, so that I can’t sleep at night. I try to write my thoughts down in order to relax my mind.
I wish you a good night sleep 🙂
Kisses from Luxemburg

Thank you so much Susana! I’ve been trying to avoid everything that contains caffeine too, I used to drink it in the evenings but not done that in a while now. And yeah dark chocolate would be bad at night too!
🙂 Ps, ihanan inspaava sun uusin postaus, tuli jotenkin hyvä fiilis tähän munkin tilanteeseen haha!

I am also struggling with sleeping at the moment. I am waking up every day around 5am and my mind is buzzing from the second I wake up. I am really busy and I do have a lot on my mind. I have also been working out in the gym each day. I thought the exercise would help as by the time I go to bed I feel absolutely exhausted but I can’t seem to switch off. I’m hoping it is just a phase and I will naturally get back to normal if I don’t let it become a problem. Hope you find a solution and if you do please share.

Marianna says
Söin juuri eilen ekaa kertaa melatoniinia, 3mg annoksen just ennen nukkumaanmenoa, ja saattoipa muuten auttaa! 🙂

Yeah i had the same problem. With me it was connected to some major life decisions. I stressed about it, but then i finally made a decision, accepted that it may end up a bad way or a good way, and then i could sleep again. And after i didnt regret my decision, so from then on i decided not to stress so much and just go with the flow, one day at the time.

Despite everything you look great!
Oh no that’s sounds terrible. I’ve had troubles sleeping during my exams, what really helped were working out (I tried to practice 30min. yoga every day and cardio twice a week), reading before bed always helped too and drinking ‘good night’ teas. And on nights when I really couldn’t shut and eye or slept awful waking up every few hours the pharmacist gave me these homeopathic remedy which helped.
Most importantly I stopped drinking coffee and any other caffeinated beverages by 4pm.
It was mainly stress and stressing about the fact that I didn’t sleep properly which kept me awake.
Hope you’ll sleep better soon.

I’m sorry to hear that Marianna! I never had a problem like this, but I couldn’t fall asleep. I laid in my bed till like 3 am and then I fell asleep and had to get up at 5 or 7 again. It was worse! My boyfriend then bought me some bach flowers drops, I took like 4 drops before I went to bed and slept like a baby. Maybe you should try this, in Germany they are called “rescue drops” for day and for night, I also take them when I’m stressed at work or when I have too many thoughts on my mind…

Hey Marianna, firstly I adore your outfit in this post! Secondly, I’d really recommend turning off your wifi at the plug at night. My mum has had awful sleep problems for the last year and suggested that it was to do with the electric energy in the house from the wifi that was keeping her up. I thought it was a little ridiculous but she tried it and I even found I was sleeping better, whilst her sleep problems have cleared up altogether! I sleep right through until my alarm now and find it much harder to get up in the morning, but it’s better than not sleeping at all! So I’d really suggest turning off your internet at the mains at night if you haven’t tried it already. I hope it helps! xx

Marianna says
Kiitos kommentista Sanna! Tuota oonkin miettinyt, ettei treenejä kenties saisi ajoittaa iltaan.

– Don’t go to bed hungry (but don’t eat too much either)
– Don’t drink any coffee during the day, at all. Nor Coke..
– Cut down on sugar and sweeteners, at least in the evening
– Write down all your thoughts to get them out of your head
– Get some fresh air in your room before going to bed. It shouldn’t be too warm inside
– If you wake up, don’t panic. Just chill and think “i will be tired tomorrow but it’s ok, i’m just gonna lay here and relax”
– If you have issues that you’re thinking about, I always tell myself “if i can change it, i will change it. If i can’t change it, i will accept it and reach inner peace”
– Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. That means less “i should” in your life. You are good enough. Be proud! 🙂
Marianna says
Some things I’m not doing right now of those are probably the fresh air and writing down my thoughts, and the panicking I should stop too. And yeah taking off the pressure and stress. Thank you so much, those were really useful! 🙂

Actually I didn’t problems with waking up to early but I have problems with going to bed before 12pm. I just can’t sleep. Now I really need to sleep but I’m having my final exam this Friday and I just can’t stop studying. But I think I need to make a pause and have a rest!
I think you need to drink a camomile tea before going to bed and minimize using laptop and iphone before sleeping – this things can boos your brain activity and may be that’s why you are waking up too early!

Whenever I think something is wrong with me I tend to put my symptoms into google too and that ends up stressing me out haha. I have had that happen to me a few times before but usually it was because there was a lot on my mind and it’s like my brain never fully shut off. It did get better though. Moikka!

I get the sleepless cycles too. What I found really useful was not using technology right before bed and instead having a cup of chamomile tea and listening to some calming music (or no music at all) and just concentrating on breathing and positive thoughts.
Hope this helps you! Xx

Hi Marianna.
Haha, you are so funny… I must admit I’ve also seeked Dr. Google’s help in the past. But usually when you do, you end up with one illness after another since symptoms can be the same for various conditions. It’s best to see a professional if you feel you need help with something.
What some of your other readers have mentioned, I think they are right. You need to ease your mind and breathe calmly, especially when it’s nearing bedtime. Personally on a daily basis I have tons of work, problems to handle, and decisions to make; that comes from me being management and running my own company. The difference is I sometimes have to say enough (when working on the computer) and force myself to go to bed since half of my mind says: ‘we can work for another hour and finish more work, but the other half says: ‘go to sleep already, are you insane?… haha! But usually when I do lay in bed I have no problem and go to sleep rather quickly. My only problem is I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and reach out for my phone, those 5 mins that I take checking up on things (and yes, sometimes also checking to see if I’ve gotten a reply from you pretty girl, I’m addicted to you Marianna 🙂 can you blame me?) will eventually add up and will cause me to feel exhausted. I know it’s difficult, I’ve failed so many times… haha, but if you’re also the same, maybe turn off your phone so it doesn’t distract you or make you want to check it at night. Or you could also try and put your mindset that it needs to sleep when it’s supposed to and switch off from all things related to the internet. We have it too good these days and unfortunately in can also damage us and turn us into zombies from not sleeping well. 😀 To put it in perspective focus on all your activities and daily life stuff during the day, and shut it off when you are nearing bedtime.
If all else fails, a vacation is always a good option. How about California? You’ll love the warm weather and sunny days. Would love nothing more than to have you over on my part of the world and show you around. 🙂 You are dear to us (your readers) and you are dear to me. Take good care, okay? Hugs!
Jay

Thank you for the comment! Yes google definitely isn’t the best place to look for the right answer, especially when it comes to health. That’s the worst thing when you start looking at your phone at night, I’ve been the same, and after that falling into sleep again is much harder! Those are all good things you mentioned, I’ll pay more attention on avoiding electronic devices at night. Vacation would be so nice, haha! Thank you so much for the supportive kind words! Have a good week Jay! 🙂

An active brain can be a good or bad thing, but once you start losing sleep over it, it becomes troublesome. Working out is a good idea, but you need to relax too. Try meditating before bed and enjoy a cup of decaf tea to calm yourself down. Wind down by journaling – that’s a good idea! The body needs sleep and a bit of relaxation to repair itself.
Take care of yourself! xx

Hey don’t stress anything. any day above ground is a blessed day..and what you’re going through is normal.. Usually very creative & beautiful minds have trouble sleeping because of the intense amounts of energy that goes through your brain..Einstein .Franklin, & every genius had the same phase its just your body adapting…I mean its not easy mixing & matching & looking great at the same time lol..and stay away from haters .someone probably trying to give you the evil eye..if you get that gut feeling go with it..if your gut feeling tell you to keep away do it..even if its the slightest feeling..try and give charity. Charity kills evil… And it doesn’t have to be money . a simple smile is a form of charity . so smile its beautiful :).. Ill pray for you sweetie .remember god is bigger then any evil on this earth.so take care sweetie .

Try taking magnesium pills and melissa tea before going to bed. If it does not help, go and see a doctor. When I had troubles with falling asleep prescripted calming pills helped me a lot (after I stopped taking them, the very fact I can take one in case of a problem was veeery calming itself)

Mulla oli just samanlaisia nukkumis vaikeuksia ennen joulua.

Hi, Marianna 🙂
Just wanna say a couple of nice words to u. It’s so admirable that u did really start following your resolutions! I have no idea, but can imagine though how much time it takes to answer all the comments, to take pics and write at least one post per day and at the same time have time for a daily routine. I for example failed when promised myself to post smth on instagram every day, just didn’t know what to post and write, didn’t want to post bad pics.. and then realized that I don’t wanna force myself anymore to do that. I can imagine how hard it could be to start doing all that! You probably have such a strong willpower:)
Marianna says
Hi Mary, and thank you SO much for the comment! <3 You've no idea how much that means to me, readers are the biggest inspiration and motivation, keeps blogging as such a fun thing to do. 🙂 And yeah no need to force yourself to do that, if the inspiration strikes then Instagram about it, until then, do what you really like doing!

I think the best thing you can do is keep a diary where you diarise everything that you need to do, appointments you need to make, etc. Keep lists of creative ideas, post you want to write and to-do lists in your diary as well so they’re all in one place. If I have them organised in a diary I tend to feel like I don’t need to stress about anything while I’m sleeping. This is generally what I do when I go through these phases. I hope that helps!

That’s a really good idea, get the thoughts out of my head and I won’t probably feel stressed after being organized more. Thank you so much Leanne! 🙂

Hi Marianna,
I also have this problem… You have to empty your head before going to sleep. Write tasks to do on a sheet. A realistic list, a little bit every day. At night the brain works a lot. You think all you have to do and that is unconscious. The problems come at night. You have to chase the dark thoughts. You have to find what’s bothering you to change that. Read a good book before to bed, no computer and phone 🙂
Ps: My English is not very good. I hope this is understandable 😀

Hey Marianna!
If your head is full of stress and thoughts when you wake up too early maybe that is the best time for you to write down all of the stuff instead of doing it before going to sleep. Maybe that could help you organize your thoughts and maybe sleep for two hours in the morning then.
Maybe it would also be a good idea to really get up at the time you wake up. Have a light breakfast, go for a walk and after that do whatever you need to do in the day. Also try not to go to bed early the next night but at your “normal” sleeping time. After a while your body will take back the sleep it needs, I think…
If all of that does not work try to bring your sleeping pattern into question. Maybe you just need 6 or 6 1/2 hours of sleep after all to be fit (which is totally fine in a healthy lifestyle). Sleeping more than your body or brain needs to could also be stressing for the body and can make you feel tired the whole day.
Hope you get well soon! 🙂

Yes that’s something I have to start doing every night before going to bed, that must help. I used to need at least 8 hours of sleep before this, so I hope this just goes away with time and relaxing. 🙂 Thank you so much for the comment! x

Marianna says
Totta varmasti tuo kaikki! 🙂

Dear Marianna, I hope the situation will resolve soon for you, it’s totally exhausting when you don’t get enough rest. Maybe just try to take things slow for a period (I recollect waking up early during the period when I was too excited about my plans and activities). Just take it slow and take it easy. Sometimes it is so important to just ‘switch off’ our mind, relax and breathe. Take care 😉 x

Love love that outfit and all the pieces in it! Big scarves are truly the best statement pieces especially this winter! I hope that your sleeping problems will fo away soon, some basic tips that might help are drinking lots of water – but not too much!- and avoiding exercise, TV and phone and eating (especially really heavily) about an hour before sleeping. Yeah it doesn’t leave that many options..! But for example reading a book is often a good sleep starter 🙂

When I was about 11 I always had problems with sleeping and when I laid in bed and couldn’t sleep immediately I would get worked up, panicked, cried and could not sleep because I was worrying so much about not being able to sleep. So my mum always said: close your eyes, resting is nearly as good as sleeping. You might not be as fit in the morning as with a good night sleep, but you’ll be just fine. Close your eyes and relax.
And that really helps. Most of the time, I just fall asleep in the following 60 min because, who can stay awake if it’s dark and their eyes are shut? 😀
And what is also really important: don’t go surfing the internet or check instagram etc when you cannot sleep, because the bright light from your phone will wake you up 🙂
Hope it helps!
Marianna says
Oh no you experienced that in such a young age! But that’s a good tip, even resting and trying not to panic, best things you can do. Mums are always right. 😀 Yes I definitely won’t start scrolling through instagram 4AM again, that’s what I did when this problem started… x

Hello Marianna,
Even when you don’t do anything with your face or hair, you still look beautiful! Lucky lady.
As for your sleepless phase, I’m sure it’ll pass 🙂 if you can identify any thoughts that are keeping you awake, write them down – I do this as I suffer from bad anxiety, and I sometimes find it hard to untangle my thoughts without writing them down. If you write them down, it helps make them a bit more tangible and easier to work through to figure out more helpful thoughts, to try and reason with yourself. If you do keep suffering from sleepless nights and it begins to have a bad effect on your health, go and see a doctor! I don’t know if my advice is helpful – the mind is a funny thing, it’s often out own worst enemy! Look after yourself, flower 🙂 get a nice, milky drink before bedtimes. xx
